About a month ago Jonny, my husband, got in a bike crash (road bike with pedals, not a motor cycle). Some of my family wanted to see pictures of the cuts and bruises and for you that do not know the story here it is.
Jonny was in a road race going up east canyon about 30 miles and then another 30 miles back. Usually I go and support him at his races but I was taking my dad to the air port so was unable to attend. He was in a big group of at least 40 people. He was on the right side of the group toward the front. Doing very well and they were on their way back, almost done. The man in front of Jonny all the sudden went down in front of him. All Jonny could remember was seeing him go down in front of him and trying to hit his brakes. The next thing he remembers is waking up on the ground with people all around him saying not to move the ambulance will be here soon. They get there and Jonny tells them, hey I don't have health insurance (yea I know it sucks), the paramedic says don't worry we are taking care of you. Then they put him in the back of the ambulance. He refuses an IV, thankfully because that probably would have cost another $400, they get him to the hospital and do a Cat Scan, MRI, and Xrays. Then he waits.
Me on the other hand am having a lovely time with my dad, step mom, and brother driving them around SLC and showing them the sites. All of the sudden I get a phone call. I normally don't answer numbers I don't know, just in case it's someone from my church wanting me to do a talk or something, but something says pick up the phone. When I do there's a women on the phone telling me, "your husband is coherent now and asking that you come to the hospital". Thats all they can tell me, they wont tell me if he's ok, what happened and if he's got any problems. So I drop the fam off and floor it up to the hospital. When I get there this really old, I mean really old man, escorts me to where he is. I wanted to ask him to just point, but then I felt bad. We finally get to where jonny is and he's sitting up trying to get out of the board they've got him strapped to with a neck brace on. He said he'd told the nurse several times that he'd needed to pee. They told him he couldn't move until the results were in on his head. So my husband got himself out and snuck down the hallway and went pee. It was pretty funny to watch him shuffle his way down the hallway, looking back and forth with a neck brace on for nurses.
After waiting forever we got the ok to go and he was ok. We found out by a friend that the guy that fell in front of him hit a water bottle and couldn't do anything, then fell and broke his femur bone, then Jonny runs over him, hits his head, then some other guy runs into the old guy too. Apparently 9 people crashed. Hopefully all of them had insurance because our bill is around $4000. Well at least Jonny's ok.
